10 Signs That You Might Be a Sushi Addict

on 27th Dec, 2016
Ah, sushi. At first glance, a simple dish, but upon closer inspection, is actually a food with more diverse options than you have fingers to count. You enjoy sushi. In fact, you enjoy it a lot. And with all of the health benefits of sushi – vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and omega-3s, all of which contribute to lower cholesterol levels, better blood pressure and a longer lifespan – it’s easy to understand why. But do you like this popular rice-based dish too much? Here are 10 signs that you might actually be addicted to sushi.

You Know Where All the Best Sushi Places Are

You know where all the best places to get sushi are, including Sushi Counter, if you live in Saudi or UAE. You don’t even need directions to get there. When you’re asked where you want to go for lunch or dinner, you rattle off two or three of the closest ones to your current location. Not only do you know the best places, though, you also know which ones not to go to. In a new location? That’s okay. You researched ahead of time all of the closest sushi locations to your hotel and have thoroughly studied all of the reviews.

The Chef Knows You by Name

No matter which place you walk into, the sushi chef knows who you are as soon as you walk in the door. He greets you like a friend who has just stopped by for a casual visit. And rather than asking you if you want the usual, he just serves you up omakase style, because he knows that no matter what he serves you, you’ll love every bite.

You Know the Right Amount of Order

No matter how many people you go out with, or whom you are with, you know exactly how many rolls to order to ensure that everyone has enough. Typically, two rolls are sufficient for the average person, but if you have like-minded sushi mongers with you, you know you’re going to need a few more.

You Want It All the Time

It doesn’t matter if you just had sushi for dinner last night, or even for lunch that afternoon, you want sushi again. It’s all you can think about. Sushi even graces your dreams with its presence. There’s no escape from it, and you don’t mind at all.

You Know All the Sushi

You know all the different types of sushi. Not only that, but you know all the Japanese terms. You can identify each type of fish with just one glance. You even know the correct uses for the condiments (that wasabi goes in the soy sauce for sashimi and the pickled ginger is a palate cleanser), and that you dip sushi in the soy sauce fish side down. It’s all for a good reason. You’re prepping yourself for your sushi tour of Japan.

You’ve Tried Making Sushi at Home

You bought all of the ingredients and the sushi mat. You quickly realize that sushi is more than just a food; it’s an art form. But on those occasions where you can’t make it to one of your many favourite sushi restaurants, making it at home will do in a pinch to satisfy your craving. At least until you leave the house.

You React Negatively When Someone Doesn’t Agree

It hurts, physically hurts, when someone says they’ve never had or, worse, don’t like sushi. Then you get defensive. The world needs to know just how amazing sushi is, and you’ve taken it upon yourself to inform them.

Pregnancy? No Way!

If you’re a woman, the idea of giving up sushi for nine months (or longer, if you plan to breastfeed), is one that sends you into a blind panic. Live without sushi for almost a year?! Nope, never going to happen.

You Drool Over Images

Whether they are the pictures you took and posted to social media yourself, or ones that have been posted by your friends, every time you see an image of sushi, your Pavlovian reflex kicks in and you start to drool. And then the sadness kicks in because, well, you can’t actually eat it.

You're Willing to Try It All

You’re willing to try anything at least once. Heck, chances are, even if you weren’t sure about it, you’ll try it again. You’re not afraid. While you’re at it, you’ll jump at the chance to get your hands on the newest craze, the sushi burrito, which is conveniently found at Riyadh's and Dubai’s Sushi Counter. A giant sushi roll stuffed full of your favourite sushi ingredients? Yes, please.

If you can identify with most, or all, of the above indications, you’re most likely a sushi addict. Not to worry, though; it’s not a bad thing. And if you're addicted to sushi in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Saudi, Sushi Counter will happily indulge your addiction.
